Wise Faculty of Life Sciences, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel; email: nelson@post.tau.ac.il Introduction The major antenna complex of Photosystem II (PSII) is composed by the Lhcb1,2 and 3 gene products organised into heterotrimers. It has been shown that heterotrimeric LHCII complexes are connected to the PSII core in distinct positions thus building up a supramolecular complex in which the structural and functional role of individual Lhcb1-3 proteins is still to be elucidated PHOTOSYSTEM II. PSII is a multisubunit protein complex located in the thylakoid membranes of all types of plants, algae, and cyanobacteria (Barber 2003).At its heart is the reaction center (RC) core, where light energy is converted to electrochemical potential energy and where the water-splitting reaction occurs. Since P. tricornutum photosystem cores tend not to segregate as discrete bands along sucrose density gradients (Lepetit et al., 2007, 2010), thylakoid membranes were solubilized to a final concentration of 2% α-DDM (w/v) to improve separation of the photosynthetic membrane protein complexes. 2018-06-06 Each photosystem is made of two components: 1) antenna complex that consists of 300-400 chlorophyll a and b molecules and other accessory pigments such as carotenoids and 2) reaction center that consists of one or more chlorophyll molecules with a primary electron acceptor. Photosystem 2 has a maximum absorption at a wavelength of 680 nanometers.

Electrons first travel through photosystem II and then photosystem I. The Electron Transport Chain. While at photosystem II and I, the electrons gather energy from sunlight. Photosystem II is the first step of photosynthesis, where the chlorophyll molecule uses light energy to take an electron from a water molecule. This splits the water molecule, generating oxygen and hydrogen ions. The electrons and hydrogen ions are used to power the creation of ATP, and ultimately carbohydrates, in later stages of photosynthesis.

Photosystem I finally produces just NADPH through another Photosystem II is the first membrane protein complex in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms in nature. It produces atmospheric oxygen to catalyze the photo-oxidation of water by using light energy. It oxidizes two molecules of water into one molecule of molecular oxygen. Photosystem II is the first protein complex in the light-dependent reactions of oxygenic photosynthesis. It is located in the thylakoid membrane of plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Within the photosystem, enzymes capture photons of light to energize electrons that are then transferred through a variety of coenzymes and cofactors to reduce plastoquinone to plastoquinol. The energized electrons are replaced by oxidizing water to form hydrogen ions and molecular oxygen.

This electron transport system uses the energy from the electron to pump hydrogen ions into the interior of the thylakoid. A pigment molecule in photosystem I accepts the electron. Photosynthetic Inhibitors control many broadleaf and some grass weeds. In general, these herbicides inhibit photosynthesis by binding to D1 proteins of the photosystem II complex in chloroplast thylakoid membranes. Herbicide binding at this protein blocks electron transport and stops CO2 fixation and production of energy needed for plant growth. A noncyclic electron flow starts in photosystem 2.

The excited electron must then be replaced. In (a) photosystem II, the electron comes from the splitting of water, which releases oxygen as a waste product. In (b) photosystem I, the electron comes from the chloroplast electron transport chain. Figure 6: Formation of O 2 by photosystem II. Oxygen atoms from the split water molecules also accumulate within the thylakoid space.
